Working together to build a Networking Key Terms wiki

Overview

Throughout the quarter we will experiment with different collaborative communication technologies, such as this wiki. Think of it as a shared online whiteboard where we can collaborate as a class to build an online glossary of networking terms. We can share information, making our research accessible to everyone. Play around with this wiki. Notice how you can add comments to a page, see what people have changed, and edit all the text.

Objectives

Through participating in this exercise, you will

  • either learn how to use a wiki, or gain more experience using a wiki for a new purpose
  • experience collaborating with others on a wiki for a shared purpose
  • learn the advantages and disadvantages of a wiki for online collaboration
  • develop an online glossary of networking terms for future reference

Your tasks

Each of you is required to:

  • Create one new page in the wiki (See example: Token Ring.)
  • Add one key term
  • Quote two definitions from sources such as Smart Computing and Web-o-pedia. Feel free to add other sources such as videos from YouTube.
  • Write one concise definition, that combines the two quoted definitions, for any term in the wiki at the top of its page
  • Edit two other definitions
  • Add comments to two pages
  • Add one or more tags to two definitions as needed
  • Search for tags to find all the key terms in that category
  • Write a reflection. See Deliverables below for details.

Nolan Wright:I must be missing something because I don't see how this exercise teaches us much about networks. We have other opportunities to engage in collaborative projects, including opportunities to work with Wikis. I would have learned far more about network terms as far as that goes by spending the time that this took reviewing a complete existing glossary.
Anonymous:For mac users...do *not* try to edit/create pages from Safari (unless you are far more tech-savvy than I am)!! I got a screen full of html only and panicked. Much much easier in firefox. If you go to help and search for "Safari" there's a conversation about why, but basically use firefox! Hopefully this is the right place for this kind of comment. -madeline
